United fly out of the blocks
Old Trafford was rocking from the very first whistle. Manchester United, playing with electric intensity, took the lead in just the 6th minute through a sharp counterattack. Eight minutes later they doubled the advantage — 2-0 — leaving Liverpool's 61% possession looking completely redundant. Casemiro and Mainoo suffocated every Liverpool build-up in the middle of the park.
United's first-half numbers were extraordinary for a side with only 39% of the ball: 17 total shots, five on target. Wirtz and Szoboszlai tried to unlock the defence but found no way through.
Liverpool hit back after the break
Arne Slot reorganised at half-time, and the response was immediate. Liverpool pulled one back in the 47th minute, then levelled at 2-2 nine minutes later. The atmosphere shifted — suddenly Liverpool's superior possession was translating into real danger, and a famous away win looked possible.
Red Devils strike the killer blow
But United had other ideas. In the 77th minute, a lightning counter-attack cut Liverpool open and the Red Devils restored their lead at 3-2. Old Trafford erupted. Liverpool pressed for an equaliser in the final quarter but United's backline held firm to seal a memorable victory.
