Pogon Szczecin — the surprise leaders

After three rounds, the unexpected leaders of the Ekstraklasa are Pogon Szczecin with a perfect nine points. The Szczecin side have won all three of their matches — beating Legia 1:0, Cracovia 2:0 and Motor Lublin 3:1 — and are playing the most convincing football of any side in the league. Last season Pogon finished in mid-table, so this start has caught many observers by surprise.

Legia and Lech in pursuit

Legia Warsaw sit on six points after their draw at Korona, having dropped off the top spot. Lech Poznan, the defending champions, made a slightly stuttering start to the season but demolished Piast 3:0 in Round 3 and are increasingly looking like themselves. Lech have won the last two titles and will not give up without a fight.

Pre-season favourites struggling

Rakow Czestochowa have lost two of their three matches — against Slask and Widzew — and have just three points. A dreadful start for one of the main title contenders. Jagiellonia Bialystok won their opening two games but then fell to Widzew and also look inconsistent so far.

Promoted sides finding their feet

Wisla Krakow have three points and are beginning to understand what the Ekstraklasa demands. Wieczysta Krakow are yet to pick up a point and are fighting hard. The Krakow derbies promise to become one of the most heated sub-plots of the entire season — three clubs from the same city in the same league is a phenomenon not seen since 1953.
