The numbers tell the story
The opening matchday of the 2026/27 PKO BP Ekstraklasa season delivered 20 goals across 9 games — an average of 2.2 per match. Five teams won, two drew and two lost. A notable pattern emerged over the first three days: every victory was decided by a single goal (four times 2:1 and twice 1:0). It was only Monday's Zaglebie Lubin that managed a two-goal winning margin, beating Piast Gliwice 2:0.
Grosicki vs Lawa — 21 years between them
The oldest player of the entire round was the legendary Kamil Grosicki of Pogon Szczecin — 38 years and 46 days old. The Polish football veteran is still part of a top-flight squad, which is impressive in itself. The youngest, meanwhile, was his Pogon teammate Natan Lawa — just 17 years and 28 days old, and also the youngest player to start a match in the entire round. A 21-year age gap between the oldest and youngest player at the same club is a rare sight at any level.
Records and curiosities
Jan Grzesik of Radomiak Radom registered a goal involvement (goal or assist) in the opening match of the season for the second year running. Bartosz Bereszynski of Motor Lublin played his first Ekstraklasa match since 18 December 2016 — nearly a decade away from the top flight. Alan Uryga of Wisla Krakow is playing his 11th league season in the club's first team. Maciej Kuziemka (Wisla Krakow) and Marcel Regula (Zaglebie Lubin) led the way with 6 shots each. Mileta Rajovic of Legia Warsaw had 3 shots on target — the best individual figure in that category across the whole round.
Surprises of the matchday
The biggest shock was Rakow Czestochowa losing at home to Wisla Plock 1:2. One of the title favourites started with a defeat. Defending champions Lech Poznan drew 0:0 with Cracovia — last season Cracovia thrashed them 1:4 on the same ground, so a point is acceptable, if unspectacular. The revelation of Matchday 1 was undoubtedly Wisla Krakow — back after four years, a full house, and three points straight away.
